About the Program

As the second most commonly spoken language in the United States, Spanish is fast taking over English as the most common language in the country. As the world of today is becoming increasingly globalized, it is becoming increasingly important for people to have an understanding of Spanish, a language that is filled with practical applications and internationally recognized and rich literary works, in order to deal with the world of tomorrow.

Focus of Study

Learning Outcomes:

  • Be able to speak the language well enough to satisfy routine social demands and limited nonspecific, work related tasks
  • Be able to comprehend face-to-face speech in standard language spoken at a normal rate with some repetition and rewording by a native speaker not accustomed to dealing with foreigners
  • Have sufficient comprehension to read authentic printed material or edited texts and material within a familiar context
  • Be able to write routine social correspondence and simple discourse as well as cohesive summaries, resumes, short narratives and descriptions on factual topics in the past, present, and future times
  • Possess a broad understanding of the history and civilization of the target culture
  • Possess a critical and theoretically-based awareness of the literary and cultural traditions, periods, genres and contexts of the target language
  • Be able to develop short critical and analytical essays using appropriate scholarly terminology in the target language.
  • Be able to express oneself in writing and orally in an advanced register of academic language.

Spanish - Elementary Education Track

Our Spanish BA program with a track for elementary education integrates courses from the College of Education, preparing students to become proficient Spanish-speaking educators. This interdisciplinary approach ensures that graduates are well-equipped to teach Spanish effectively in elementary schools, addressing the growing need for bilingual education. The program's importance lies in fostering linguistic diversity and cultural competence, essential skills in our increasingly multicultural society.

Spanish - Secondary Education Track 

Our Spanish BA program with a track for secondary education combines courses from the College of Education, equipping students to teach Spanish in middle and high schools. This interdisciplinary training ensures that graduates are prepared to deliver high-quality language instruction to adolescents, meeting the demand for skilled secondary-level Spanish teachers. The program's significance lies in promoting advanced language proficiency and cultural understanding among young students, crucial for thriving in a globalized world.

Program Requirements

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Spanish requires the following:

  • A minimum of 31 credit hours of SPAN coursework and 6 credit hours of FCS coursework. At least 24 of those hours must be upper division (courses numbered 3000 or higher).
  • A grade of C or better in courses applied to the major.
  • A minimum 2.0 GPA must be maintained in all SPAN coursework.
  • No more than 60 credit hours of SPAN coursework may apply to the bachelor’s degree.
  • The Department of Languages and Cultures provides assessments and placement exams for UCCS students seeking to demonstrate language proficiency.
